French composer Francis Poulenc wrote the libretto himself after a drame surréaliste written by Guillaume Apollinaire in 1903 and which caused an uproar at its first performance in Paris in 1917. Poulenc had already set to music Le bestiaire ou le cortège d’Orphée (The bestiary or the procession of Orpheus), poems written by Apollinaire in During one of the darkest periods of the Second World War, Francis Poulenc turned again to the verses of Guillaume Apollinaire. This groundbreaking poet numbered Picasso and Braque among his friends, and coined the word "cubism." A young Francis Poulenc attended the opening night of Apollinaire’s play Les Mamelles de Tirésias in June of 1917, which garnered a great deal of interest from the artistic community. His life cut short by Spanish Influenza, Apollinaire died in November of 1918, just months after his marriage to Jacqueline Kolb, his inspiration for the book In 1931 Poulenc composed no fewer than thirteen songs, among them settings of Apollinaire, the first since 1919. In the Quatre poèmes, one commentator has found ‘the veiled nostalgia, the tongue-in-cheek irony, the semi-popular tone that mark the best of Poulenc’s settings of this poet’.
