The nice thing about having an elective monarchy (which Denmark has by default) is that the dukes are allowed to vote for the heir and since I'm the king my vote wins out against a tie and since I have all the duchies accept one, I'm the kingmaker. Obviously this only really works when you have a relatively small demesne.
As a general rule, most monarchies were a combination of Elective and Hereditary whenever nobles had any usable degree of power; in a legally elective monarchy, the family of the previous King was often influential, and stood to gain prestige and favors (and thus votes). I tend to only go elective in a couple cases the common one being I have a kingdom and a small enough realm that I can have all my vassals be counts and up to a maximum of one duke. Since if you are a king only dukes can vote that means the only votes are you and the one duke and your vote will always trump theirs.

If territory is not de jure your, laws that applies within depend from the relevant de jure entity. That would mimic, for instance, law of France applying in Normandie, or have Duchy of Normandie vote in France if France was an Elective monarchy.
You can vote for the children with the best education and traits and it only can become risky when you are ruling an empire or your dukes hate you. To avoid that, make children have grey eminence education and 20+ diplo and problem solved! Elective Gavelkind for a very long time. Recently adopted feudalism and I am currently trying to switch to elective monarchy. My vassals flat out refuse to vote for my eldest son. He has 24 diplo, is a grey eminence, Brave, kind, and married to a lady with a claim to the throne of England(which is a massive Norse kingdom in this game). All I need is for my vassals to vote for him, which they won't.

2019-12-06 Since if you are a king only dukes can vote that means the only votes are you and the one duke and your vote will always trump theirs. So you can just choose your successor. It is also fine when you are starting out and have no vassals for the same reason. Once you get big enough there are multiple vassals that can vote though I can't stand it.

At one game my vassals were just trolling me whit elective monarchy. They voted person A. When I voted same person they switched to person B. Then when I voted person B they changed back to person A. After few tries I decided to stop trying. Result was that they were all the time changing their votes and spamming me whit dozens of useless messages.
